UNESCO World Report of Languages

Towards a Global Framework of Assessment for Linguistic Diversity

In August 2018, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and UNESCO Communication and Information Sector launched the Survey of World Languages as a step towards collecting data for the World Atlas of Languages. This survey consisted of two questionnaires, one for sign and one for spoken languages. It was sent to the National Statistical Offices and language institutions in 193 UN Member States. The main goal of the survey was to collect a large amount of data on world languages - spoken and signed.

The institutions of 57 UN Member States responded to the survey, allowing the drawing of conclusions about certain categories, which were further analyzed and transformed into analytical texts. The conclusions drawn from the Survey served as a basis for assembling the World Report of Languages, an in-depth analysis of several aspects of language use and language practices:

  • Language Diversity

  • Language Documentation

  • Language Status

  • Language Endangerment

  • Language Emancipation

  • Language Sustainability

  • Language Technology

The World Report of Languages presents the outcomes of work carried out by UNESCO since 2016 working in cooperation with the UNESCO World Atlas of Languages scientific group, which includes a number of the world’s leading scholars in the subject area.

The 2022 UNESCO World Report on Languages: Towards a Global Assessment for Linguistic Diversity will be released in the first part of 2022.
